Overview
Novade Systems wanted to re-vamp their mobile and web field management app. We, at Novade, designed and built a lighter version of the app called Novade Lite using Flutter and Google Design System.
This was to help and improve the field worker’s experience on-site and also make lives easier to manage their time and tasks.

Role
My role was that of a Senior UX & UI Designer throughout the project cycle from requirements gathering to ideation and wireframing.
Team: 1 Product Manager, 1 UX and UI Designer, 1 Product director & CEO.
Problem Statement
- How might we create an easy-to-use app to help field workers, contracts and consultants to do their job easily? For eg get the required sign-off before starting work, have an inventory of documents to refer and so on.
- How might we easily understand their daily workflow and reduce paperwork?
User Research
We spoke to our company consultants who worked closely with contractors and project managers to understand how they performed their daily tasks using the mobile application in the field and project manager administrators who used the web application to allocate tasks and upload documents.
The project was done during the COVID period, hence it is hard to directly speak to construction workers in Singapore. I did short interviews and sent out questions to workers in France.
User flow and customer journey
I worked along with Product Manager, and consultants to map out the current processes which was used on the field. We also had a previous system used by clients for reference. I was able to find pain points and work on it.

Personas
Smith project manager handling multiple construction projects. Smith would like to have a one-stop portal for handling contracts, assigning tasks for to his employees, and saving the draft documents.

Charles is a construction worker who likes his field of work. However, his daily routine involves a lot of paperwork before starting his day at work. He would like to have a one-stop app that would make it easier for him to handle his daily work, forms, and tasks.

Solution:
I got to lead, ideate, and create designs for over 30 features within the web and mobile applications of Novade.
For example, let’s take the feature of creating tasks
- To manage their employee’s time and manage tasks during the day, we designed a task management system to help managers plan the tasks for the day and week. For the employees, it would provide them with a portal to request, complete tasks, and add notes for the work done.
- The manager would then be able to allocate resources based on the availability of the employees and their preferences. What was previously done over paper,and verbal communication was now completely digitalised and accessible for everyone within the team at the same time.

Design Language System
As the design team grew to two people and since we were developing for different platforms, it resulted in a need to create a Design Language System. We used atomic design principles and ensured all the text, icons, and typography were aligned across mobile and web. Below is a sample of the Design Language System we created.
Results
During the regular weekly check-in with the CEO was happy with the progress. As for the users, they were thoroughly impressed and happy with the outcome of the app. The app is currently deployed and used in Singapore, France, Germany, India, Philippines etc.
